The municipality of Gessopalena also includes the following suburbs: Castellana, Coccioli, Colle Mazzetta, Contrada Rossi, Isolina, Macchie, Pastini, Mandrini, Morgia del Pesco, Piano Mazzetta, Pincianesi, Riguardata, San Biagio Silvilini, Santa Croce, Valloni Cucco.
Gessopalena was part of the Kingdom of Naples before the unification of Italy (1861) and belonged to the former Abruzzo Citra province.
